How much does a gardener cost in Wirral?

How much should you pay for a gardener? It's a simple question that somehow produces about seventeen different answers.

Some gardeners charge hourly. Some charge by the half-day. Some price each job. Regular maintenance can work differently again.

There's a problem with relying entirely on hourly rates

You still don't know what your garden is actually going to cost. If Gardener A charges £30 an hour and Gardener B charges £40, that tells you very little if one takes four hours and the other takes two.

What affects the cost of a gardener in Wirral?

   The size of the garden

   A small lawn and a couple of beds clearly take less time than a large garden with multiple borders, hedges and planted areas. But size isn't everything. A large, well-maintained garden can sometimes be easier to work through than a small garden that's completely overgrown.

   What you want doing

   “Gardening” covers quite a lot. Grass cutting, weeding and general tidying are different jobs from major hedge reductions, garden clearances or tree work. Current local pricing data reflects that difference: Checkatrade's Wirral listings show different averages for maintenance, grass cutting, hedge work, clearance and more specialist tasks.

   Whether it's one-off or regular

   If we see a garden regularly, we're maintaining it. If we see it once every six months, there's a good chance we're rescuing it. Regular maintenance can stop jobs building up into much bigger pieces of work.

   Access

   If machinery and waste can move easily between the garden and the van, great. If everything has to travel through the house, down steps or through restricted access, it'll naturally take longer.

   Always check what happens to the waste. Some gardening prices include removal. Some don't. Others depend on how much the job produces. The important thing is knowing upfront.

Is it better to pay a gardener by the hour or by the job?

There's nothing inherently wrong with hourly gardening. But as a customer, we think knowing the price is nicer than watching the clock.

For straightforward jobs, we'll try to give you a clear agreed price based on what needs doing. For ongoing maintenance, the aim is even simpler: an agreed price for your regular visit.

You know when we're coming. You know roughly what we're keeping on top of. You know what you're paying. No starting from scratch every fortnight.

What about regular garden maintenance?

This is where we think gardening can work much better. Instead of remembering to contact somebody every time the lawn gets too long: choose a regular day, agree the price, keep the slot.

Then we come back on the agreed schedule and keep things under control. For many gardens, every two weeks during the main growing season works well, although the right frequency depends on the garden and how neat you want to keep it. The RHS notes that conventional lawns may need mowing weekly or fortnightly between March and October depending on growth and conditions.
